The first
extract comes from the Lonely Planet Guides: http://www.lonelyplanet.com.
The second comes from Sunworld Holiday Brochure: April to October 2000.
The third is taken from The New Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1998.
Characteristics of the three texts
Lonely
Planet Guide: aimed at the "alternative", budget traveller, who wants
to get off the beaten track and not just visit the most popular areas.
As in this extract, the writers of these guidebooks often adopt a humorous
or even sarcastic tone in their descriptions, while attempting to provide
up-to-date information.
Holiday brochure: the aim here is obviously to sell a holiday (to
the British market) and therefore all positive aspects of the island are
emphasised.
Encyclopaedia: here factual information about the island is presented
in a highly objective and rather dry way.
