Alice
Longman was being blackmailed by the victim, but so were various other
local dignitaries such as Arthur Lonsdale, the Tory candidate and
Dr. Harrap, the hypocritical Chairman of the Committee for the Preservation
of Moral Values. Alice went to the victim's house to pay him the blackmail
money, but he wanted more. She got angry and hit him on the head with
the ashtray, knocking him unconscious. Then she panicked and ran out
thinking she had killed him. Dr. Harrap and Lonsdale heard her cries,
found the note and saw their opportunity to eliminate their blackmailer
and publicly humiliate the Liberal candidate, ensuring the Tory candidate's
victory. Lonsdale slipped out, stabbed the unconscious victim and
then returned to his surgery. A quarter of an hour later, he went
to the house with Dr Harrap to find the corpse and the note and put
the blame on Alice. The note with the initials could have been addressed
to Alice Longman, Andrew Leamington or even Arthur Lonsdale. We don't
know. However, Alice confessed because she believed she had murdered
the victim. Holmes rightly suspected the politician. Moral: never
trust right-wing politicians or moralists. |
